University Affairs Department

The University Affairs department of WLUSU is the voice of advocacy for the students, representing them on matters concerning the environment, diversity, academics, municipal relations, and post-secondary education. The overall goal of the department is to promote a high quality environment within the Laurier community. It also endeavours to bring all student representatives across campus, including Student Senators, Student Governors, Faculty and Department Representatives, together to work on issues that concern students vis a vis the Laurier Student Caucus.

The Vice-President: University Affairs (VP:UA) is the head of the department and manages both an internal and external portfolio.

Internally, the VP:UA oversees the management of the Economic Aid Team, the EcoHawks, Equality Awareness, the OUSA Campaign Coordinators,  the CASA Campus Ambassadors, the Municipal Relations Commissioner, Academic Issues Commissioner and the Grant Fund Council. The Green Fee is also managed by the University Affairs Department. The VP:UA also represents students on a variety WLU committees, and handles student concerns and advocacy.

Externally, the VP:UA acts as the official representative of WLUSU to the three levels of government, reviewing and creating policy, working with officials to meet the needs of students, and lobbying the government for needed change in the post-secondary education sector. Municipally, the VP:UA sits on the Waterloo City Council’s Town and Gown Committee. The VP:UA works closely with the Municipal Relations Commissioner to involve students in the community and establish good relationships with the City. Provincially, the VP:UA is a steering committee member of the lobby group, the Ontario Undergraduate Student Alliance (OUSA). OUSA works to improve the accessibility, affordability accountability and quality of higher education in Ontario. Federally, WLUSU is a member of the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA). CASA is a lobby and advocacy organization that too holds post-secondary education as its primary objective and reason for existing.
