Before You Sign Your Lease, Know Your Rights!

Waterloo, ON, November 19, 2008 – Laurier’s Legal Municipal Resources is hosting five “Know Your Rights!” sessions to inform students about legal issues regarding off-campus housing. The sessions are being held on Wednesday, November 19th in SBE 1220, November 20th at King St. Residence, November 24th at Bricker Residence, November 25th at Waterloo College Hall Residence and November 26th at Conrad Residence. All sessions are at 7pm.

Encountering a lease for the first time can be confusing and difficult to read.  By inviting students to an info session, Legal Municipal Resources hopes to increase student awareness of their rights when signing a lease. Sessions will contain talk about tenancy, renting and by-law information pertaining to the Residential Tenancy Act (RTA). Legal Municipal Resources is available all year for students who have questions about landlords, roommates, subletting, and their legal rights.

Ashley Maxwell, coordinator of Legal Municipal Resources, encourages first year students to attend a “Know Your Rights!” session, “First year students who are nearing the end of their first academic year, and are beginning the process of looking to move off campus are our largest target group at Laurier. This event is a great way to educate first years about their rights, and answer their questions, concerns, and thoughts about living off campus and beginning to deal with landlords and leases.”
