About Foot Patrol

Foot Patrol has been ensuring that all members of the Laurier community arrive home safely since 1992. With over 170 volunteers, WLUSU’s Foot Patrol program is a completely volunteer-based walk-home service.

Every night a male-female, radio-dispatched team escorts students to and from campus as well as to off-campus destinations, either by foot or by van.

These volunteers are easily recognizable by their black and blue jackets worn while on duty. All teams are equipped with a two-way radio and flashlight, as well as a first aid kit and condoms. Furthermore, all Foot Patrol volunteers are certified with Emergency First Aid training and are in contact with ERT via the 2-way radios to ensure the safest Laurier campus possible.

Foot Patrol operates daily 6:30pm until 3:00am. Footers provide walks to anyone who needs to get somewhere and stress that "No walk is too long or too short!" and ask "Who’s taking YOU home?"

Aside from walking people, Foot Patrol also patrols the campus regularly throughout the night, keeping an eye out for any activities that seem suspicious. They also promote safety for the greater Waterloo community by talking to local school children and patrolling local neighbourhoods during Halloween. Finally, Foot Patrol has started a new initiative in conjunction with the Women’s Campus Safety Committee and WLUSU with our Safety Whistle Program. These free safety whistles are available around campus, and in the Foot Patrol office and are to be used for a portable means of communication in an emergency.

To reach the Foot Patrol office, dial 886-FOOT (3668). This line contacts dispatchers while Foot Patrol is operating. During hours when Foot Patrol is not active, please feel free to leave a message and a volunteer will reply promptly.
